7,000 Turn Out for Polar Bear Dip

An estimated 7,000 people took part in the 38th Annual Carlin Soulé Cayucos Polar Bear Dip, Jan. 1 at the Cayucos Pier. Hundreds more lined the pier to witness the spectacle, as dippers rang in the New Year with a chilly dip in the Pacific. Air temp was about 65 and water temp in the low 50s, as firefighters, lifeguards, Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and ocean rescue teams patrolled the shore and the water to make sure everyone got out OK. Awards were handed out for the Youngest Dipper — 3; Oldest Dipper — 80; Farthest Traveled — New Zealand; and various categories for costumes. -Photos by Neil Farrell
