King Day Celebration, Jan. 15

January 15 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

A special event is being planned in San Luis Obispo to commemorate January’s Martin Luther King Holiday.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or NAACP, San Luis Obispo County Branch, along with Bend the Arc, Congregation Beth David, RACE Matters and JCC Federation of San Luis Obispo will present their first “Communities Together Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Event,” from 4-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at Congregation Beth David, 10180 Los Osos Valley Rd., near the intersection with Foothill Boulevard, and is free to the public.

The celebration includes music, films, food, an African American museum, with keynote speaker Dr. Donald Cheek, formerly professor of education at Cal Poly and presently teaching at Fresno State University. Dr. Cheek is a recognized authority on race relations, diversity, social psychology, African American community development, and ethnicity.

“Through events such as this and the continued support from our local community and friends,” Stephen Vines, NAACP SLO County Branch president said, “we are able to provide awareness, growth and change in San Luis Obispo County.”

The organizers are accepting advertising sponsorships for the event program, email Cheryl Vines at: sc_vines83@att.net or call (805) 619-5354 for information.
