A thick fog blanketed the harbor for the 8th Annual Jesse King Memorial Paddle race on Sept. 30, delaying the start of the race but not dampening the spirits of the participants. All types of paddle craft were eligible and the event included a 10K long course that exited the harbor mouth, rounded the sea buoy and back to Coleman Beach; and a 3K sprint down the harbor channel to Tidelands Park and back. King was a U.S. Coast Guard Honor Guard and Machinery Technician 3rd Class, who died in a free diving accident off the coast of Cambria on July 1, 2009. The race is a benefit for the Friends of the Morro Bay Harbor Department and Morro Bay Junior Lifeguard Program.
