Jan Goldman Named 2017 Citizen of the Year

Voluminous volunteer, Jan Goldman, was honored as the 2017 Citizen of the Year by the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce at a gala dinner Jan. 26. Dubbed the ‘Fire and Ice Ball’ the night featured a performance by local singer and businesswoman, Shauna Marie, dinner by Something’s Cooking Catering, and a silent auction of donated gifts. Morro Bay High Principal, Dr. Kyle Pruitt introduced Student of the Year, Kailah Buchholtz, calling her a wonderful young woman who has achieved much. Fr. Ed Holterhoff introduced Goldman saying how she is always about helping others, is easy to admire and has all the qualities a town would want in a citizen. Goldman said when she retired from teaching and escaped from Los Angeles 10-years ago, she didn’t know anyone here. So she started volunteering and has never stopped. She’s been an officer with Rotary, the Garden Club, Women’s Guild at St. Timothy’s, works at the Visitor’s Center, serves on City advisory boards, Friends of the Library and more. Lori French, a fisherman’s wife, mother, industry advocate, volunteer and freelance writer, was honored with the Living Treasure Award. Susan Stewart introduced her long-time friend, noting that French’s generosity is endless. French, in typical fashion and wearing a tiara, made light of the honor, ribbing the Mayor on stage because fishermen need reserved parking on the Waterfront, and thanking everyone with humility and humor. Tim and Gemi Cowan, owners of Pizza Port were honored as Business of the Year. They purchased the business in 2005 and have used to make a difference, giving many teens their first jobs, and support local causes including sports teams and youth. Tim Cowan said he was surprised, honored and grateful at the award. ‘Living in Morro Bay is a dream,’ he said, ‘growing up and working and owning a business here is a dream come true.’
