Morro Bay Son and Longtime Businessman Dies

Morro Bay son and long time businessman, David Ross, died peacefully on Jan. 16, 2018 in San Luis Obispo. He was 71.

David lived most of his life in Morro Bay. He attended Morro Bay High School and was part of the first graduating class of 1965. He married the love of his life, Mary, in 1966 and they raised a beautiful family together.

David took over his parent’s business, The Fish Shanty Restaurant on the Morro Bay Embarcadero, and eventually ventured into the candy business, opening Carousel Taffy Shops, in Morro Bay and along the Central Coast.

David loved life, loved the ocean and considered all women beautiful. He was a huge fan of Elvis and dreamed of owning a boat someday. He was passionate about his family, and he adored his children and took great pleasure in doting on his many grandchildren. He will best be remembered by his motto: “Everyone must be full of food, drink and laughter.”

David is survived by his three adult children, Deana Kitajima, Bryan Montgomery, and Samuel Ross, and grandchildren Justin, Michaela, Steven, Kennedi, Jordan, Everlee and a new edition, Samantha who is due to be born this spring.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mary Elizabeth (Beth) and Gordon Ross; siblings John, Kathleen, and Daniel, and his cherished wife, Mary.

A funeral was held Sunday, Jan. 28 at Rock Harbor Christian Fellowship in Morro Bay, followed by a Celebration of Life reception at the Morro Bay Eagles Aerie. Pastor John officiated the ceremony.

In remembrance of David Ross, friends are asked to please send a donation to Rock Harbor Christian Fellowship, the food pantry or the Eagles.

The Ross Family wants to thank the many doctors and nurses of Sierra Vista ICU, French Hospital ICU and San Luis Obispo Ambulance for their efforts, care and dedication.
