Pirates’ McClish Takes Second At Ojai

Mo0rro Bay High Cross Country standout, Audrey McClish, is running away form the field so far this season.
McClish, who won the girls’ varsity race at the Sept. 9 Morro Bay Invitational followed it up at the Sept. 16 Ojai Invite, with a strong showing on the rugged, 3-mile trail course near Lake Casitas.

A 2-time defending Los Padres Athletic League Champion, McClish finished second in 19-minutes 20-seconds and Pirates’ Coach Chuck Ogle said that was a 10-second improvement over her time last year, when she was just a sophomore.
The Pirates’ Anelise Dempsey, a junior, finished 10th in 20:03.2, which Oglee said was a 16-second improvement over her time last year.
Adrienne Frere finished 31st in 21:06. “That’s an excellent mark for a ninth grader,” said Ogle. Another Pirates’ stalwart, junior Mailani McKelvy, was the fourth Pirate over the line, finishing 49th at 21:47. She ran 21:56 in 2016.
Rounding out Morro Bay’s Top 5 was senior Scout Bidleman, who was 66th in 22:15,, which Ogle said was “a whopping 1:42 improvement over last year.” Some 200 runners toed the line in the girls race.
“A strong freshman class and the continued improvement of the varsity veterans bodes well,” Ogle said, “but the present spread of an almost 3-minute spread between the first and fifth runners [the scorers] will be a vulnerability should the Lady Pirates make the post-season. The squad will need to work on this.”
The Lady Pirates’ 147 team score was good enough for sixth place in the 18-school meet.
With 297 runners in the boys’ varsity race, the Pirates were led by senior Andrew Holder (160th at 19:51) and sophomore Michael Blanchard, followed by a rapidly-improving freshman Aidan Johnson close behind.”

Morro Bay ran in the Brug Invitational at Santa Margarita Lake on Sept. 23 and has the LPAL Mid-season Meet Wednesday, Oct. 4 at River Park in Lompoc.
